Criminal Justice & Public Safety

The SANDAG Criminal Justice & Public Safety Division is an essential source of information for local communities and policymakers on regional issues regarding public safety and public health, crime data, and crime-reduction strategies. Our team is made up of dedicated experts who make sure databases are continually updated and who participate as members of several local criminal justice-related committees, councils, and task forces to report on crime-related issues.

SANDAG has compiled and reported regional crime data for the San Diego County since 1980 and remains the only local source for regional statistics not available at the national level.

In 2023, publications transitioned to reporting California Incident Based Reporting System (CIBRS)/National Incident Based Reporting System (NIBRS) crime data provided by the Automated Regional Justice Information System (ARJIS). CIBRS/NIBRS includes Group A and Group B offenses. Group A offenses include more serious crime categories and is divided into crimes against persons, crimes against property, and crimes against society. Group B includes less serious crime categories.

A report on crime in the San Diego Region is published on an annual basis. Other crime information is also compiled, analyzed, and published throughout the year.
