At SANDAG, we’re committed to promoting strategies that increase supply of and accessibility to a variety of housing choices for all residents in the region. Housing availability has a direct correlation to quality of life, and we take our role seriously in ensuring that housing is accessible for all, especially for low-income families, seniors, and younger residents. Our plans for increasing housing involve better land use and transportation coordination based on smart growth and sustainability. What is smart growth? Smart growth is an urban development pattern that creates more compact, higher-density development in urbanized areas. These areas are walkable, bike-friendly, near public transit, and promote good community design, resulting in more housing and transportation choices for those who live and work in these areas. Using TransNet funds and other grant programs, we are working hard to implement projects that promote sustainable and climate resilient communities, and accelerate the production of housing, particularly infill development.
