SR 78 North County

Caltrans and SANDAG developed a Comprehensive Multimodal Corridor Plan (CMCP) for North County. This CMCP outlines possible strategies to bring more travel choices to the region while improving transportation safety and connectivity. The CMCP was developed in partnership with the cities of Carlsbad, Escondido, San Marcos, Oceanside, Vista, as well as the County of San Diego, the North County Transit District (NCTD), and the North County community. The completed CMCP will help us compete for local, state, and federal funds to finance transportation projects in the San Diego region.

The North County CMCP study area focused on connectivity for all transportation modes on State Route 78 (SR 78) from Oceanside to Escondido in the east and its connections with Interstate 5, Interstate 15, Interstate 8, and State Route 76.

The North County project team examined and analyzed the corridor’s performance and estimated its future usage based on the complex geographic, demographic, economic, and social characteristics of the area. The project team collected community and stakeholder feedback via public meetings and the project’s virtual engagement hub.
