Central Avenue Complete Streets

STATUS: In Progress: Design

Project Overview

The Central Avenue Complete Streets project was previously known as the Central Bikeway project. We renamed it to more accurately reflect the work that we are doing. The Central Avenue Complete Streets project will provide connections between destinations within the San Diego communities of Kensington and City Heights, including three major business and transit corridors, two parks, a skate plaza, a community center, and three schools.

The project includes a 1.2-mile bikeway that will begin at Adams Avenue in Kensington and continue south along Terrace and Central avenues to Landis Street, parallel to State Route 15. The project also includes improvements such as a new section of Class 4 bikeway, a new cul-de-sac, curb extensions, crosswalks, traffic signal modifications, and signs designed to improve travel and safety for all roadway users.

Together, this project and the  SR 15 Commuter Bikeway, which opened to the public in August 2017, will create 2.2 miles of bikeways connecting Camino Del Rio South and Landis Street.

Schedule

As of 2026, this project is in the final stages of design. SANDAG is preparing to begin the procurement process for selecting a contractor, with construction activities tentatively set to begin in summer 2026.
