Currently, many people access the beach in Del Mar between Coast Boulevard and Torrey Pines State Beach by entering the railroad-right-of way and walking along the bluffs. Crossing or walking near the railroad tracks creates safety concerns for those crossing and for passenger and freight trains. To ensure this area is safer and more accessible for everyone, we’re exploring possible beach access improvements such as a crossing under the tracks or a walking trail along the bluffs.
This project was initiated at the request of the California Coastal Commission as a condition for allowing us to complete the bluffs stabilization work in the area. The Del Mar Bluffs Access Improvements project is led by SANDAG, with support from regional partners including the City of Del Mar, North County Transit District, the California Coastal Commission, and Caltrans.
