SANDAG Receives $21.5M For Palomar Street Grade Separation Project

On Wednesday, the Biden-Harris Administration announced over $2 billion in grant awards through the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) program to fund infrastructure projects across the country. SANDAG, in partnership with the City of Chula Vista, was awarded $21.5 million for the Palomar Street Grade Separation Project.

This project will grade separate Palomar Street from a passenger and freight rail corridor, eliminating a rail crossing that causes frequent delays for drivers and has been the site of 85 accidents over a 10-year period.

Funding provided by the RAISE grant will be used for right-of-way acquisitions and utilities relocation. When completed, the project will decrease emissions by reducing vehicle idling while waiting for rail traffic to pass. Improved safety features will also make the Palomar Transit Center more accessible for people who walk, bike, and roll.

This project is currently in the design phase. Additional funding is required to start construction.
