Washington Street and Mission Valley Bikeways

The Washington Street and Mission Valley Bikeways project is the third of four segments planned as part of the Uptown Bikeways projects. The 3.3-mile bikeway project features separated and buffered bike lanes, bus stop enhancements, and traffic calming measures. It also offers improvements for walkers such as a new walking path, high visibility crosswalks, curb extensions, and traffic signals.

The project was strategically selected and designed to enhance transit and roadway operations and maximize safety for all road users. SANDAG worked with local businesses, residents, schools, and community groups to incorporate feedback on project aesthetics, landscaping, and design features to the extent possible. SANDAG will manage construction, and the City of San Diego will own and operate the bikeway.

Project Timeline

SANDAG worked closely with people who live and work in Uptown neighborhoods, nearby communities, and the City of San Diego to study and refine the project design concepts. During the planning phase, project goals, alignments and design features were developed and refined using input from a community advisory group. The group met with SANDAG and other community members about the Uptown Bikeways project four times at key alignment analysis milestones.

On July 22, 2016, the SANDAG Board of Directors approved the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) exemption for segments 1 through 4 of the Uptown Bikeways project. We completed preliminary engineering and environmental clearance in July 2016.

During the final design phase, SANDAG worked with the community and partners to fine-tune aesthetics and design elements that were practical for the project.

SANDAG is preparing to begin the procurement process for selecting a contractor. Construction activities are tentatively set to begin in summer 2025.
