SANDAG received a grant from the California Department of Boating and Waterways for the development of a Plan for the San Diego region that facilitates the management of sand on a regional basis. The San Diego region is one of three areas in the State chosen to prepare a Plan. This is part of a statewide program to develop a Sediment Master Plan lead by the Coastal Sediment Management Workgroup, a group of state, federal, and local/regional entities.
The Management Plan is a guidance and policy document that will describe how management of sediment targeted at coastal erosion can be implemented in an expeditious, cost-effective, and resource-protective manner throughout the San Diego region. The goal is to identify sediment sources that can be used to restore and maintain coastal beaches and other critical areas of sediment deficit or excess; reduce the proliferation of protective shoreline structures; sustain recreation and tourism; enhance public safety; and restore coastal sandy habitats through a consensus-driven process.
