Thanks to the work of the Shoreline Preservation Working Group, during the last 25 years, SANDAG has developed regional sediment management policies, managed an ongoing shoreline monitoring program, and completed several projects to maintain local beaches and coastlines. These efforts are especially important for our region, whose coastline spans about 70 miles and where locals and tourists visit to enjoy the San Diego beaches. We are seeing that over time, California’s shorelines are steadily eroding and development has decreased the natural supply of sand that helps to sustain our beaches.
SANDAG is continuing to make recommendations on shoreline fill policy, beach nourishment, structural stabilization and other measures that help keep our beaches healthy.
