State Route 78 (SR 78) is the primary east-west travel corridor between the cities of Escondido and Oceanside. It crosses through the cities of Carlsbad, Vista, and San Marcos, as well as unincorporated areas of San Diego County. It is a major route for local and regional travel in North County and provides connections to Interstate 5 (I-5) and Interstate 15 (I-15).
Increased use of this corridor is creating significant congestion and delays. SANDAG and Caltrans are working on several multimodal improvements to improve travel through this area. In addition to the I-15 /SR 78 Managed Lanes Direct Connectors (also known as I-15/SR 78 HOV Connectors) and I-5/SR 78 Interchange Improvements (also known as SR 78/I-5 Express Lanes Connector) projects, Caltrans is also working on other improvement and maintenance projects in the area.
