SANDAG’s TransNet Environmental Mitigation Program (EMP) protects, preserves, and restores native habitats that may be disturbed by construction of local and regional transportation projects. This unique component of the TransNet [link] Extension Ordinance includes funding for mitigation and conservation efforts including acquisition, restoration, and enhancement of sensitive habitats plus management and monitoring activities.
Since 2004, we’ve acquired or helped restore more than 40 sites, covering 9,215 acres. SANDAG goes beyond traditional mitigation strategies by buying large parcels of land in advance of need to satisfy the mitigation requirements of current and future projects. This results in significant cost savings and a streamlined process.
Beginning in 2008, TransNet EMP acquired parcels of land with critical habitat along the SR 76 corridor. By combining that land with acquisitions by other agencies, we created a continuous wildlife corridor spanning thousands of acres along the San Luis Rey River and its tributaries, ensuring a healthy, biodiverse ecosystem.
